Hotel del Coronado by Janene

Janene's story was originally posted on The Clan Destiny forum way back in 2006. I found it today and wanted to repost it before it was lost forevermore on a corrupted hard drive. Ya just never know! ~Carolyn

Hello,

I can't believe how long it's been since I've added something to this board.  The day's go by so fast and I can't figure where all the time went! Amazing.  Life I guess, just life itself takes a lot of time! Work takes a big chunk of time....speaking of which...

Work is going well for me, we will be making a few changes in our department (as usual) and I will be managing our outbound callers.  You know, all those people calling you at home and at work trying to sell you something!!  Yes, I shall be motivating those folks to keep going every day!  I need to ramp up my own sales skills so I can help the team.  There is always something at work, never a dull day or more than a day of basking in the roll!  Anyway, I will miss the inbound team...NOT!  The outbound team has a higher level of expectations and hopefully a higher level of work ethics....a girl can always dream!

Our manager team (Debbie, Carmella and Robert and me) went to Las Vegas for a couple days to a Credit Union Call Center seminar.  It was interesting...doesn't seem to matter what state you are from some of the same challenges face us all.  The usual motivation and attendance issues are high on the lists for everyone.  There is some solace in group numbers but it doesn't solve the problem.

The conference was fun and it was interesting to see Vegas....it’s been about 10 years and boy has it changed.  The buildings are amazing, the shopping is too. We -- the girls -- went to the Ceasars/Ballagio shopping mall where I found a purse I thought was too cute and thought it would be fun to have...at a price tag of $12,500. (yes--that's thousands). I carefully set it back on the shelf and moved on.  After a few hours of those prices a key ring of $100 sounded almost cheap!  It was a shopping experience I shall always remember with fondness....because I brought home no actual purchases.   I could not afford (or would not) pay the price for anything I saw but what a different world.  I really can't imagine having that kind of money to buy stuff.

The next night Carmella and I moved down to another shopping area which was more affordable and yes I picked up a couple small items. Had to buy something...right? I did find some perfume I decided is my next...it’s by Channel.

The next weekend Dirk and I went with another couple to San Diego.  We stayed at the "Del" (Del Coronado) a fancy resort I had always wanted to stay since the first time I saw it about 10 years ago!  It was built in 1888 and over all the years has been magnificently restored to its original beauty.  The wood detail is amazing.  The rooms were old and beautiful and you could really imagion the year being early 1900's.  The halls are narrower, the ceilings were very high and the windows old.  They have added all the modern conveniences although kept them in the period style.  We arrived on Saturday and left on Monday and stayed at the hotel the entire time.  We took walks on the beaches and watched the surfers and swimmers and at night we sat and watched the amazing sunsets over the ocean!

There was also some shopping and I bought a beautiful cameo charm bracelet -- seemed appropriate considering the location.  Check out their web site its www.delcoronado.com anyway I think that’s it.  The building is white with a red roof -- you'll know you’re in the right place.  The hotel also has a couple "eternal" ghosts that reside there.  We were in the room next door to one of the two "haunted" rooms and I think I heard evidence of them, of course maybe it’s just my imagination.

I started to get sick with this cold after we arrived so on Sunday after breakfast  in the "Crown room" it has an oval ceiling with no supporting pillars (just amazing) I went back to the room for a nap while Dirk went downstairs to watch the football games on the big screens.  Our room was in the old section and so the hall was on one side (next to the outside wall) and our other side of the room faced the back of other hotel rooms - so no rooms on two sides of us.

We were on the top floor.  We had opened our windows to allow the ocean breeze to cool the room.  Anyway, I'm laying down and I am hearing what sounds like kids outside bouncing a ball against the wall and some normal outside noise, so I get up and close the windows and the door to the bathroom and lay back down and as I'm resting I'm thinking there's sure a lot of noise out there for not having anyone too close to us so I turn on the ceiling fan to help drown out the noise and so eventually I fall asleep.  It didn't seem out of the ordinary and didn't feel wrong at the time but as I think it over after the fact I am wondering how in the world I could have heard those things since we had no balconies or walkways near us and we were on the fifth floor!

When Dirk came in the room to change for dinner he's like, "Why are all the windows closed?" I say, "because of the noise outside." He gives me this weird look and says “whatever" and proceeds to open all the windows again to allow the cool breeze and quiet in.  Yes, it was quiet!  I think I was hearing the kids from the next door -- anyway that's what I want to think!

I heard the two haunted rooms actually have stuff moving, towels dropped, TV, and lights going on and off , fan turning on and off, bed looking like someone was sitting/sleeping on it etc.  One of the aids for the President (Bush) recently when he visited stayed in the room next to us and during the night called the front desk to tell them to stop the noise in the room above him. When they told him he was on the top floor he required they move him to another room!  Interesting stuff.  Just keeps the charm of the hotel going...

I did not see the woman ghost though that roams the halls and stairs at night. Maybe next time.  I guess the haunted rooms are booked out on Halloween nights for the next 6 years!

Hotel del Coronado. San Diego, CA
A beautiful hotel with a classic and enduring ghost story: a woman named Kate Morgan checked into the hotel under an assumed name, and planned to meet her husband, a doctor, who intended to give her medicine for her stomach cancer. She was found dead on the steps leading to the ocean, shot to death. It was ruled a suicide, but was it? Whoever shot her, it’s Kate Morgan who’s decided never to leave the Hotel. She’s become almost as much a draw as the hotel itself.

Like I said earlier I caught my cold that weekend and I am sure caused much consternation to my fellow passengers as I coughed all the way home on the plane!  I felt bad for the couple sitting next to me.  I did get myself checked out and I have bronchitis--doctor gave me some cough syrup to help me sleep and some pills for the day but man, it just seems to keep me down.  Can't get over it as quickly as I used to and it sure prevents me from getting much accomplished! I am starting my third week and hope this is the last!  Besides, I must get ready for the big Thanksgiving Day!  We will have three sitting at our table...I'm so excited because JR will be joining us this day.  I can't wait.  I figure I'll cook all the same stuff just on a much smaller scale. So wherever you all are, think of us on this day and we will think of ya'll too.

Christmas will be here before you know it!  We are planning on arriving sometime on Saturday and then leaving to drive back Thursday, so plan on us.  I am trying to collect as much warm weather clothing as I can find. I'm thinking we need to start gathering this stuff now!  It's hard to imagine how cold it will be with all that snow around us!  We will definitely want to have some fires going during the day in the fireplaces.

Well, it’s time for my evening nap before dinner and bed...hahaha.  Actually I need to go find something to eat as Dirk will be home soon.

Hope everyone is doing well and I can't wait to see everyone's beautiful faces in December!

Love and kisses to all,

Janene
